Control module, eh? Where exactly is that located? And what kind of damage should I be looking for?

It's a common issue. It's usually tucked up behind the steering wheel. Honestly, unless you're comfortable pulling the steering wheel, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. They'll diagnose it properly and replace the faulty part. Could save you a headache.

Took it to the shop. Connectivity problem confirmed, defective cable connection in the steering wheel, as suspected. 95€ later and the steering controls are working again. Thanks for the input!

Sounds familiar. I had a similar sensor issue with my Seat Ibiza, same steering wheel. Have you checked the control module for any obvious damage or loose connections?
