Seat Toledo diesel engine issues

My 2016 Seat Toledo with a diesel engine is giving me all sorts of trouble. It's done 188696 km. The check engine light is on, the engine power is way down, and it's smoking like crazy when I accelerate. Plus, it runs rough, my fuel consumption has gone up, and it jerks like mad when accelerating. Oh, and there's this loud hissing sound when I put my foot down. I'm thinking it's the EGR valve, maybe it's defective or jammed? Could that even affect the catalytic converter?

I had a similar issue with my Toledo, though it wasn't exactly the same. Reduced power and the check engine light were the first things I noticed. Have you checked for any obvious vacuum leaks? Sometimes a small leak can cause similar symptoms and mess with the recirculation.

Vacuum leaks, huh? I haven't checked that specifically. Where should I be looking, and how would I know if I found one? I'm not super experienced with diesel engines, but I'm willing to try and figure it out. Could that really cause all these problems, even the smoke and jerking?

Yeah, a vacuum leak can cause those symptoms, but the hissing sound points more towards the EGR valve itself, I think. Given the mileage and all the symptoms you're describing, especially the smoke, it's probably the EGR. Honestly, it's a pain to get to on these diesel engines. I'd say get it checked by a workshop; they can diagnose it properly. They can also tell you if it’s clogged or defective. Better safe than sorry!

Took the Toledo to a workshop and you were right, it was the EGR valve. They replaced it, and the total cost was 355€. Now the engine runs smoothly, no more smoke, and the check engine light is off. Thanks again for your help!
