Seat Toledo Diesel Engine Trouble

My 2006 Seat Toledo diesel is acting up. It has about 108000 km. Lately, the fuel economy is poor, it sometimes stalls when idling, the check engine light is on, and it smokes a bit when I accelerate. Could it be a defective mass air flow meter?

That sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my Toledo. The engine stalling and the check engine light suggest a MAF sensor failure. Have you checked the air-fuel ratio?

Air-fuel ratio? How do I check that? Can I do it myself, or is special equipment needed? What's the correct value for my engine?

You'd need a diagnostic tool to read the air-fuel ratio. Given the symptoms and mileage, a faulty MAF sensor is likely. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop to confirm. It could save time and money. I bet a new MAF sensor will solve it.

Thanks for the help! The garage confirmed your diagnosis. A new MAF sensor was fitted, costing 365€. The car runs great now. No more smokey starts, and the fuel economy is already better!
