Seat Toledo engine light and fuel consumption issue

My 2018 Seat Toledo with a diesel engine is throwing up a check engine light. I've noticed a significant jump in fuel consumption too. I scanned the OBD and it points to the inlet VANOS mechanics being faulty. Anyone had similar issues? Could this be BMW VANOS related? I'm worried about low power and I'm hoping it's not the timing chain.

VANOS failure on these engines is not uncommon. The check engine light and increased fuel consumption align with typical symptoms. Have you checked the camshaft solenoid valves? A defect there, or a power supply issue to them, could be the culprit. I experienced a similar issue on my Toledo.

Did you have the same error codes? Was it difficult to diagnose? I'm wondering if it could also be related to the timing chain, though the car isn't that old.

The error codes were similar. Ruling out the timing chain is wise, but at that mileage, a VANOS solenoid issue is more plausible. I suggest having the solenoid valves inspected by a workshop. It's a relatively straightforward diagnosis with the right equipment.

Took it to the shop. It was a faulty camshaft solenoid valve, just like you said. A new one was fitted and the check engine light is now off. Fuel consumption seems back to normal. Cost me around 250€. Thanks for the help!
