Seat Toledo Engine Running Rough
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Seat Toledo with a gasoline engine is experiencing rough running, a check engine light, and a strong exhaust smell, possibly due to an exhaust leak. The initial suspicion is a particulate filter issue, but other potential causes include the EGR valve or catalytic converter. Suggestions include checking the lambda (oxygen) sensor, as an exhaust leak can affect sensor readings and engine performance. Ultimately, the problem was resolved by replacing the downstream oxygen sensor.

Lambda sensor, eh? Is that the same as the oxygen sensor? And you reckon an exhaust leak could cause all that? The engine is running pretty rough.

Yes, lambda sensor and oxygen sensor are interchangeable terms. The leak can definitely mess with the readings and cause the engine to run poorly. I'd still get it checked by a workshop though, it could be difficult to pinpoint it without the proper tools.

The downstream oxygen sensor was the culprit. Cost me 375€, but the car is running great again!

That sounds awfully familiar. I had a similar problem with my Toledo – though I can't recall what year it was built. Check the lambda sensor before the catalytic converter. An exhaust leak can also trigger those symptoms.
