Was there an error code stored? Where was the problem?

Yes, there was an error code. I didn't find the problem myself; I took it to a workshop. They said it was the oxygen sensor and the cable looked dodgy.

I got it sorted. It was a faulty connection to the oxygen sensor. Cost 95€ to get it fixed.

I had a similar problem with my Toledo. Check engine light and increased fuel consumption. It could be the oxygen sensor; I had the same symptoms.
