Seeking Advice for 2014 Volvo V70 Diesel Cold Starts and Weak Battery Issues
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Volvo V70 diesel is experiencing longer cold starts and sometimes fails to start, with a weak battery during start-up. The issue is suspected to be related to a malfunctioning battery sensor, possibly due to a previous mechanic's work. A similar problem was resolved by replacing the battery sensor, which is a known issue in Volvo diesel models. The recommended solution is to take the car to a trusted garage for a diagnostic check to confirm if the sensor is the cause or if there are other underlying issues.

Hey, Greatly appreciate the insight, really reassured me a bit there. So, the bloody sensor it is then! Your experience matches mine pretty closely. I'll definitely follow your advice about taking it to a trusted garage and mention my sensor suspicions. Just out of curiosity - and if you don't mind me asking – do you recall roughly how much the whole sensor replacement set you back? Also, since they fixed it, have you had any more issues, or has it been smooth sailing? Cheers for the help, talk soon!

Hey there, So, about the cost - mine didn't leave much change from a €320 note. My mechanic charged me precisely €315 to swap out that pesky battery sensor microprocessor. Yeah, not exactly chump change. But considering the headache it was causing, well worth it to get my trusty Volvo back in shape. Oh, and since the fix – smooth roads ahead. Not a single hitch since that sensor was sorted out, hands down one of the best €315 I've ever spent. Cold starting issues and all, gone! It's like driving a brand new vehicle, I'm telling you. No worries at all, anytime you need a bit of car banter just hit me up. Hope the fix works just as well for you and your V70! Catch you later, and good luck!

Hello again, Thanks a ton for answering all my queries and being patient with me. It seems a bit steep, that €315, but I guess if it's going to save me all the trouble I've been having, it's going to be a well-spent amount. Hearing about your problem-free experience since the fix is reassuring to say the least. Fingers crossed it works just as well on my Volvo V70. I'll surely be driving it to a reliable garage and discussing the sensor issue soon. Can't thank you enough for your advice, definitely helped me feel less worried about the whole situation. I'll be sure to keep you posted on how everything turns out. Take it easy, and cheers for your help! Have a good one!

It sounds like you're experiencing cold start issues with your Volvo V70 2011. Since you've already replaced the battery and glow plugs, the next thing to check could be the fuel system. It's possible that the fuel is not being delivered efficiently when the engine is cold. This could be due to a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or issues with the fuel injectors. I would recommend having a mechanic inspect the fuel system. If the issue persists, it might be worth checking the engine control unit (ECU) for any fault codes. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions?

Hey, Just from your description, it sounds like your suspicions might be right. I had something similar happen to me with my 2017 Volvo S60. Wacky cold starts and weak battery during starts as well, annoying as you like. Turns out it was indeed the battery sensor's microprocessor which went defective. From what I learnt, it's a kind of common issue in diesel engines of Volvo models around that range. Frustrating, but nothing to be too alarmed about. They had to replace the entire battery sensor in my case, since fixing the old one was more trouble than it worth. For handling this with your mechanic, I'd suggest just taking it to a trustworthy garage. Tell them your symptoms and your suspicion about the sensor. They'll do a diagnostic and confirm whether it's the sensor or something else going haywire. Anyway, let me know how it goes and best of luck with it! Cheers!
