Seeking Advice for Black Smoke and Power Loss Issue in 2023 Seat Tarraco (Gasoline) - Suspected Lambda Sensor Problem

Loss of engine power

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Hey fellow car enthusiasts! I'm having a tricky issue here with my 2023 Seat Tarraco (gasoline engine). Out of nowhere, it's been giving me black smoke on acceleration, the check engine light is on, and I'm also experiencing a loss in engine power with an unsteady run. On top of that, it's jerking on acceleration and the fuel economy is far worse than normal. I suspect the lambda sensor could be to blame but I want some expert advice. Has anyone here encountered a similar issue? Any troubleshooting tips or shared experiences on how you resolved this at your workshop would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Hey, I had a very similar problem with my 2021 Seat Arona not so long ago. Now, I won't call myself a car guru but I've got some experience tinkering under the hood. Turns out it wasn't the lambda sensor but rather a leaking exhaust. I spotted some rust around the muffler area which was a big giveaway. Took it down to my local workshop, and they confirmed it. Fixing an exhaust leak isn't rocket science, but decided to let them handle it. I was out 265 Euro, but at least my Arona is back to running smooth. Just to give you a more detailed solution, can you maybe specify the mileage on your Tarraco and whether or not it's been regularly serviced? This way, we can rule out some other potential issues. Hey, thanks for pointing me in a new direction! I appreciate your input. For my Tarraco, I've rolled up to 78262 KM on the odometer, and I've always ensured a timely service. The latest service was carried out just a month ago, so I was really surprised when these issues suddenly came up. I will definitely take a closer look at the exhaust and see if I can spot any rust or leaks. Does your workshop give free diagnostic checks, by any chance? Thanks again!

Hey again! It’s a good thing you've kept up with the regular servicing, that usually rules out a lot of possibilities. A thorough inspection of the exhaust system should definitely be on your list, even if it's just to eliminate it from potential problems. My workshop sadly doesn’t offer free diagnostic checks. However, I strongly suggest having a proper diagnostic run by a skilled mechanic. It saves a lot of guesswork and you can really zoom in on the issue faster. As per your situation, I also wouldn't completely rule out the lambda sensor just yet. Your symptoms do fall into that possibility too. Just a heads up though, these checks might set you back anywhere between 20 to 100 Euro, depending on the garage's charges. But trust me, it'll be worth it if you find the root of the problem sooner rather than later. Keep me posted!

Hey, cheers for the advice again! I totally agree, better to find out the issue soon and nip it in the bud instead of letting it linger and turn into something worse. Really appreciate your time and thoughts! I'll get that diagnostic run at a local garage and inspect the exhaust too. Fingers crossed that it's something as simple as an exhaust leak. Will definitely keep you in the loop. Stay safe and keep those engines revving!
