Seeking Advice on '06 Kia Magentis' Persistent Check Engine Light and Performance Issues

Hey everyone, I'm dealing with some odd problems with my '06 Kia Magentis, Gasoline engine. Lately, the Check engine light's been staying on, the power hampers quite a bit, and the engine doesn't seem quite right. Plus, it's jerking when I try to speed up, it's stalling and shaking at idle. I have a hunch it might be due to a leak in the tank ventilation system, but unsure. Anyone experienced something similar and can share a few tips on how to diagnose better, or any pointers on getting it fixed at a workshop? Would love to hear your experiences. Thanks!

Summary of the thread

An '06 Kia Magentis is experiencing persistent check engine light, reduced power, jerking during acceleration, stalling, and shaking at idle. The suspected cause is a potential leak in the tank ventilation system. A similar issue in a related model was resolved by replacing a defective activated carbon filter. The recommendation is to have a professional diagnose and possibly replace the filter, as DIY repairs may be challenging without proper tools and expertise.

Hey there, sounds like quite the issue you got there! I had a very similar problem with my '04 Kia Optima, which is pretty close to your Magentis. Now, I'm not a mechanic but I have some experience poking around cars. In my case, turns out the activated carbon filter was defective. Took it to my workshop, these guys I trust. They replaced it and that fixed the issues. Cost was quite friendly too, just about 275 Euro. This can be tricky to fix without the right tools and knowledge, so I wouldn't suggest a DIY approach if you're not really experienced. If your car's symptoms match, you might be looking at a similar issue. Just to make sure though, could you let us know if your check engine light blinks or stays steady? And when's the last time you had a check-up or replacement on your ventilation system? Having more info can help us shed more light. Cheers!

Hey, appreciate the response! The check engine light just stays steady, doesn't blink. To be honest, I can't quite recall when I last had a check-up on the ventilation system, it's been a good while. Also, I've clocked approximately 9554 KM since my last service. From your description, it sounds pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. I'm not too keen on DIY-ing this, so I reckon I'll follow your lead and get a professional to look into it. Many thanks!

Hey, no worries, happy to help! I totally understand not wanting to tackle this job on your own. Car maintenance can be a tricky beast, especially when it comes to these hidden systems. Given the steady check engine light and your description, it does sound like what my Kia had. Sounds very similar to the vent system problems. The fact that you haven't had your ventilation system checked in a while does back up the theory. The mileage since your last service isn't too bad, but given the symptoms you're experiencing, I'd say it might be time to give that car some TLC. My suggestion would be to go ahead and get it checked out. Those guys at the garage sure know their way around! I hope this all turns out to be nothing more than a minor problem for your Kia. Remember, the earlier you fix it, the lesser the damage (and cost)! Let us know how you get on! All the best.

Hey, heaps of thanks for the thoughtful advice and support! Absolutely, early detection is always a win. I'll head to the garage first thing tomorrow. They've always been thorough with their diagnostics. Hoping it's just the filter as you mentioned. Will keep you guys updated. Cheers!
