Seeking Advice on '09 Volvo XC90 Heating/Cooling System and Trustworthy Mechanic Recommendations

Insufficient Cooling/Heating

Blower does not work properly

Hey folks! I've got a '09 Volvo XC90, diesel with about 162k on the clock, and she seems to be struggling with the heating/cooling system. The blower's acting up and doesn't do the job as it used to. I suspect it might have something to do with an Electric auxiliary heater issue, but I'm no expert. I had a bad run with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit wary about jumping straight back in. Anyone here had similar troubles and got some advice on handling this, and maybe on finding a decent mechanic? Cheers!

Hey! Just reading through your problem reminded me of a recent issue I had with my '12 Volvo XC60. Turned out to be the Electric auxiliary heater, alright. My AC wasn't blowing as it should have and the heater struggled a bit as well. Just like your Volvo, mine was showing its age, though not at the same mileage. Got mine checked at a reliable garage after a friend recommended it. Apparently, the auxiliary heater was acting up. The overuse and age had taken a toll on it. The mechanic explained to me that the electric auxiliary heater helps to quickly warm up the interior and defrost the windows. It's especially used when the engine is not hot enough to allow for the standard interior heating to function correctly. In my case, it wasn't working efficiently, affecting the blower and compromising the heating and cooling system, pretty similar to what you're experiencing. In all, it wasn't a doomsday problem, but it was causing some substantial comfort issues during my rides. So you might want to check the auxiliary heater before anything else. As for finding a mechanic, word of mouth is best. Reach out to car clubs, s or family members who might know someone who's reliable and knows Volvos. It's always a shot in the dark when you're not sure who to trust. Good luck and I hope you can sort it out!

Hey there! Wow, your situation sounds like a bit of deja vu with what I've been dealing with my XC90. That auxiliary heater issue might just be what's going on with mine, too. Good to know it wasn't a cataclysmic scenario for you! If you don't mind me asking, would you be able to recall how much you had to shell out for getting that auxiliary heater fixed? Just thinking about future expenses, y'know. And have you noticed any other problems with your Volvo since sorting out that problem? Cheers in advance!

Hey again, friend! You're spot on, planning for future expenses with these things is crucial. For the auxiliary heater repair, it cost me a touch of 350€. It felt like it was worth every penny though. Fixed the heating and cooling issue and, I tell ya, it's been smooth sailing ever since. After dealing with this, I haven't come across any new problems with my Volvo. It seems seeing the mechanic and getting the auxiliary heater sorted out did the trick. My old gal runs like a dream now, making those winter mornings much more bearable. Hope this helps ya out! Good luck!

I cannot thank you enough for all this info, really! Trust me, you lifted a mountain off my shoulders. A cost of 350€ sounds absolutely doable. And it's a relief to hear that your old gal's been running without issues since. I'll definitely follow your advice and scout around for a decent bloke to look at my Volvo. Can't wait to experience those winter mornings without any heating hitches. You've been such a great help. Good on you!
