Seeking Advice on 2009 Lexus LX Diesel Engine Problems: Decreased Power, Unsteady Engine, and Possible Swirl Flap Control Error

Hey gearheads, got a bit of a tricky situation with my 2009 Lexus LX Diesel. Lately, she's been acting up - engine light's on, power's down, engine's unsteady, bucks on acceleration, and makes a loud hissing sound when I speed up. Not to mention the shaking when idling. I'm suspecting a swirl flap control error on the intake manifold, but I'm hoping some of you might have had a similar experience and could shed some light. Specifically, I'm interested to know if anyone's workshop managed to pin down and solve this issue. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Lexus LX Diesel is experiencing decreased power, unsteady engine performance, and a loud hissing sound during acceleration, along with shaking when idling. The suspected cause is a swirl flap control error on the intake manifold. A similar issue in another Lexus model was resolved by addressing a defective switch intake manifold control, which also affected fuel consumption. It is recommended to have the intake manifold control checked and repaired to resolve these issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! Just to share my two cents, I experienced a pretty similar issue on my 1998 Lexus RX. I'm no expert mechanic, but I got a bit of experience tinkering with my rides over the years. The "Check Engine" light had me hauling to the workshop, and the problem turned out to be a defective switch intake manifold control, sounds a bit like your situation. Spent around 465€ to get mine fixed. Can you tell me a bit more about your ride's recent maintenance history and any changes in driving conditions or habits? I ain't no oracle but knowing a bit more about your car might help me share more specific info. Cheers!

Hey! Thanks for the insight. My LX had its last full service at 83387 KM, not much has changed since then, still using it as my daily runner, no rough terrains or anything. I've made no significant modifications or anything, she's mostly stock. Probably should mention, my fuel consumption has increased lately, not sure if this might be linked. Anyway, I'll check out that switch intake manifold control. Thanks for the help!

No worries! Always here to help a fellow Lexus owner. Increased fuel consumption might indeed be related, that's what happened with my RX too. It could be a result of the engine compensating for the fault in the intake manifold control by injecting more fuel than needed. Not a big deal but can be quite the gas guzzler until it's fixed. Since your LX is primarily used for daily running and not much else has changed, I'd reckon the switch intake manifold control could be the culprit. If I were you, I'd definitely have it checked out before anything else. We ain't running these beauties for their fuel economy, but nobody likes paying for extra fuel they don't need to, right? Stay safe and keep us posted. Happy motoring!

Thanks a bunch! You've been a real help. Based on what you've shared, it certainly seems like a switch intake manifold control issue. I'll get my LX to the workshop pretty soon and have them check out the SIC first thing. And you're right, fuel economy isn't a priority, but paying more than necessary doesn't sit well with me, haha! Will keep everyone updated on the progress. Take care and keep those engines humming!
