Seeking Advice on 2013 Lexus IS Engine Trouble: Possible Defective Boost Pressure Sensor?

Hey everyone, I've got some worries about my 2013 Lexus IS, Diesel engine, with around 69945 km on the clock. It's been acting up with black smoke spewing out during acceleration, the engine light is always on, and I noticed a drop in engine power. Not only that, but the motor feels unstable, jerky when I speed up, produces a loud hissing sound, and stalls while idling. Even worse, it shakes when it's idle too! So I'm thinking the issue might be down to a defective boost pressure sensor. Anybody dealt with something like this before? I had a pretty lousy experience with my last mechanic visit, so some advice would be appreciated - especially around anyone's experience with mechanics for a similar problem. Cheers.

Hey! You're on the right track suspecting a faulty part, but given the symptoms you described, it sounds more like an issue with the waste gate valve instead of the boost pressure sensor. I faced something similar on my 2012 Lexus IS a while back. The symptoms were almost the same - black smoke, shaky engine, increased turbo noise, and power drops. Certainly not something to ignore, because it can get worse. On my visit to the garage, the mechanics did a thorough check and finally figured out that the waste gate valve was faulty. They had to disassemble part of the turbo assembly to replace it, but the work wasn't extraordinarily complex or anything. So, before you pull all your hair out, get the waste gate valve checked. Best to get this sorted sooner than later, especially because these symptoms can cause more serious issues over time. Wish ya luck!

Hey there, Thanks for the advice. I hadn't even considered the waste gate valve to be honest. Your similar experience with the Lexus IS has kind of made me think this could be the culprit. I'm definitely not ignoring the symptoms, want to get this sorted out as soon as I can. Remember how much the fixing cost you, ballpark? Also, has anything else cropped up related to this ever since the fix or has your IS been cruising smoothly? Appreciate the help!

Hey! Glad to hear you're taking action. It's always best to tackle these issues head-on, especially when the ride starts acting up like, well, a bratty kid refusing its bedtime. As for the cost, it ran me around 860€ to sort out my GS's waste gate valve. Not exactly cheap, but certainly worth it for the peace of mind. You asked if I've had any more issues, well...since that problem with the waste gate valve, it's been smooth sailing - so far, so good. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that during my last visit, it was discovered that the boost pressure sensor was indeed faulty. So, you might've been onto something with your guess in the first place! After fixing both, it's been all green lights for me and my GS. No more engine tantrums, just pure smooth cruising. Hope this helps, and here's to hoping your IS gets back on track in no time. Cheers!

Hey! Thanks for sharing the cost and your overall experience after getting that issue fixed. It's comforting to hear that your GS has been behaving well since the fix. The cost does seem a bit heavy on the pocket, but hey, a smooth ride and peace of mind seem worth it. About the boost pressure sensor, it's quite a coincidence that you ended up having an issue with it as well. I'll definitely get it checked out and hopefully, it might resolve some of the issues - fingers crossed. Thanks again for your invaluable advice. I'm off to the mechanics; let's see what the diagnosis says. Will drop an update once I know what's up. Cheers!
