Seeking Advice on 2014 Hyundai Porter's Check Engine Light and Increased Fuel Consumption Issues

Hey fellow car buffs, I've got a 2014 Hyundai Porter with a Gas engine and it's been acting a bit off lately. There's a glowing check engine light and my fuel consumption has taken a turn for the worse. The exhaust is also smelling pretty strong. I suspect there might be an issue with the air valve. Has anyone experienced similar issues? What steps did your workshop take to diagnose/fix the problem? Appreciate any advice or shared experiences on this, friends!

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Hyundai Porter is experiencing a check engine light, increased fuel consumption, and a strong exhaust smell. The suspected issue is with the air valve, possibly due to a faulty cable/plug connection or a failing secondary air pump. Suggested solutions include checking and potentially replacing the cable/plug connection and inspecting the secondary air pump to resolve the emissions-related issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey,, had a similar thing with my '16 Hyundai H350 a while back. Truth be told, I'm no car guru, got some experience, though. Took it to my regular workshop. After a round of head scratching and diagnostic tests, turned out there was a faulty cable/plug connection to my secondary air valve/secondary air pump. Guy there fixed it up for me. Charged 95€, not too bad considering! Have you checked the Cable/plug connection on your Porter? If not, might be worth a look. Just in case, got any more details about your car's condition? Might help figure out the next step for you. Hope this helps!

Hey, appreciate your response! I do agree, it could be something similar for my Porter as well. I haven't actually checked the cable/plug connection, but I'll definitely look into it now. Regarding more details about my car's condition, it's been at 70872 KM, and the last full service was a while back. Everything was running fine till this issue popped up. Will update you once I get it checked. Thanks again for your help!

No worries,! Definitely seems like you've kept on top of your maintenance. With this type of problem, diagnosing it can be a bit tricky. For my H350, it was just a matter of replacing the plug, but that's not always the case. Sometimes, it might not just be a faulty connection, but a failing secondary air pump or air valve. It'd be a pricier fix, but it might solve your fuel economy and exhaust smell problem in the long run. Make sure the mechanic you go to checks for these things besides just the connection. Emissions-related issues can be quite a pain, but getting it sorted sooner than later would save more trouble down the road. Keep us updated on the matter. The more we share, the wiser we all become, eh? Good luck with it!

I hear ya,! The issues you've suggested seem plausible. I'll make sure to check the secondary air pump too along with the cable/plug connection. I've arranged a time with my usual mechanic for a thorough check. He's pretty good with these things. I'll definitely keep you updated. Knowledge is power indeed, and no better way to learn than sharing experiences! Cheers!
