Seeking Advice on 2014 Hyundai Xcent Diesel: Black Smoke, Engine Light, and Suspected Sensor Issue

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Shaking while idling

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Whistling noise

Loud hissing on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Hey everyone, my 2014 Hyundai Xcent diesel has been acting up lately. I'm seeing black smoke from the exhaust on acceleration, a persistent check engine light, uneven engine performance, shaky idles and even stalls. It jerks and hisses loudly during acceleration and there's this constant whistling sound. I suspect the issue might be with the boost pressure control position sensor. Has anyone faced such issues before? How did your workshop fix it? Would appreciate your tips or suggestions you might have. Thanks!

Hey there, I feel your pain. I got myself a 2012 Hyundai Grand i10 diesel with a similar issue a while back. I wouldn't call myself a gearhead, but I got some experience tinkering with cars. Took mine to a local workshop thinking I'd blown a gasket or something. But those guys there knew their stuff. After some poking and prodding, they told me the issue was a defective Electrical bypass valve which was causing all that ruckus! Had me shell out 250€ and my Grand i10 was back to purring like a kitten. But I'd say, double-check with a trusted mechanic though. If there are any other symptoms apart from the ones you've mentioned, it'd help to provide those details too. Hang in there, and hope your ride gets back to top form soon!

Hey! Thanks for the quick response. Your info is a real sanity saver. So, an electrical bypass valve, huh? Didn't suspect that one. It's funny how we can rack up miles on these beasts and still be surprised by the issues they throw our way. Mine did its 101706 KM service just the other month. No extra concerns were flagged then. I'll up your suggestion and take it to my trusted mechanic this weekend. Will also ask him to specifically check the electrical bypass valve while he's at it. Will let you guys know how it turns out. Cheers!

Hey! You're welcome! Yeah, cars can be unpredictable creatures. No matter how well you think you know 'em, they can always surprise you. That sounds like a solid plan. Your mechanic should be able to identify if it's indeed the Electrical bypass valve just like in my case, or if the boost pressure control position sensor you initially suspected, or something completely out of blue, is causing the issues. It's a good thing to dig deeper especially when it's your primary vehicle on which you rely a lot. And congrats on hitting the 100k KM milestone, by the way! Here's to a ton more happy miles once you get this all sorted out. Fingers crossed for a relatively painless (and not too expensive) fix. Keep us posted about the diagnosis and how it goes with your mechanic. We're all rootin' for ya! Safe driving out there. Cheers!

Hey! Thanks again! I appreciate the support and advice. I feel more equipped to discuss the issue with my mechanic now. And yep, that 100k KM milestone was a sweet moment. Hoping to clock in many, many more with my trusty ride once we get past this hurdle. I promise to keep you guys updated about how it all turns out. It should help others who might face a similar scenario in the future. So, off I go onto my mechanic rendezvous this weekend. Wish me luck! And keep those fingers crossed for a not-so-pricey resolution. Safe driving to you too. Cheers!
