Seeking Advice on Handling Engine Problems and Possible Camshaft Adjustments in a 2022 Nissan Cima

Hey folks! Got a problem here with my 2022 Nissan Cima with a Gasoline engine. Recently it's been acting up big time. Engine light's on, power's down, engine's unsteady, plus it jerks while accelerating and I'm noticing poor fuel economy. There's also an adjustable valve noise and a strange sound from the engine. Even found metal bits in the oil. I'm thinking a faulty camshaft adjustment might be the culprit, but would appreciate any advice or similar experiences you guys may have had. Especially interested in how you sorted this out with your mechanic. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2022 Nissan Cima is experiencing engine problems, including an engine light, power loss, unsteady performance, jerking during acceleration, poor fuel economy, valve noise, and metal bits in the oil. The suspected cause is a faulty camshaft adjustment. A similar issue in a 2020 Nissan Maxima was resolved by replacing a defective camshaft adjustment cable/plug, suggesting this as a potential solution. Additional recommendations include checking the oil pump and filter for damage and conducting a compression test to ensure no further issues.

Hey,! Sounds like I've been down a similar road with my 2020 Nissan Maxima, not too long ago. I'm no mechanic, just a car enthusiast with some experience tinkering around. My baby was throwing up the same symptoms: engine light, power drop, unsteady engine - the works. On a hunch, I took it to my trusted workshop, Bob's Auto Repair. After a bit of head scratching, they diagnosed a defective camshaft adjustment cable/plug and a fair bit of oiliness in the guts. Cost me a sweet 395 Euro, but she's been running smooth as silk ever since. That said, before I can say much more on this, could you share the mileage on your Cima, any recent tune-ups, and the specifics of your last oil change? The more info you share, the better I can recall and share from my own experience. Cheers!

Hey,! Thanks for the heads up! You hit the nail on the head. I've got Bob's in my crosshairs now. He better not try and swindle me, though! My Cima hit 38360 KM on the odometer not too long ago. Took her in for an oil change and a standard service at that point. They said all was peachy, but look at the state of her now. Will remember this for the future, one thing’s for sure. I'm definitely gunning for a thorough check on that camshaft adjustment cable now. I'll keep you posted! A big thanks for sharing your experience, helped me out a ton!

Hey, no worries at all, always happy to help out another gearhead! Sounds like your Cima's been a bit of a tough customer recently, eh? Given the km on your car, camshaft adjustment could indeed be a suspect especially if no specific maintenance related to that was done. When my Maxima had similar issues, it was around the same mileage as well. Just remember, Bob's a straight-up guy. Make sure you keep him in the loop with all the symptoms and the mileage, and he should be able to figure out the right fix. If it is indeed the camshaft adjustment cable/plug that's faulty, you’re looking at a similar cost to what I had. I'd also advise having Bob check the oil pump and filter for in case those metal bits have caused any further damage. You might also want to consider getting a compression test done just to be on the safe side since you mentioned unsteadiness and noise in the engine. Good luck with it, keep me posted. We gearheads gotta stick together, right? Cheers!

Hey, thanks again for the advice! It's always good to learn from someone who's been through the same trouble. It's comforting to know it doesn't sound like something unusual given my car's mileage. I'll definitely have Bob check those parts you mentioned and get that compression test done. This situation's a bummer, but talking it out with you has lifted my spirits quite a bit. Now I know there's light at the end of this tunnel. Really appreciate your help! Us gearheads, we're a unique breed, ain't we? Cheers to sticking together!
