Seeking Advice on Volvo V60 Diesel's Inconsistent Engine Behavior, Exhaust Smoke, and Noises, Suspected Issue with Boost Pressure Control Position Sensor

Loss of engine power

Loud hissing on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Whistling noise

Jerking on acceleration

Unsteady engine

Shaking while idling

Check engine light on

Hey folks, I'm dealing with a tricky situation with my 2022 Volvo V60 diesel. Been noticing a lot of black smoke on acceleration, inconsistent engine behavior, and even stalling while idling. It's also making some loud hissing and whistling noises during acceleration. Just to add to the mix, the engine light's on too. I've got a hunch that the boost pressure control position sensor might be playing up but I wanted to get some second opinions. Has anyone encountered similar issues and how did your workshop solve it? Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Hey there! Had a similar issue with my 2020 Volvo S90 diesel. I'm not a car expert, just got some experience from dealing with my own vehicle issues. Took it to my local workshop. After a thorough diagnosis, they told me the electrical bypass valve was defective. Cost me about 250 Euro to get it fixed. I'd say check on that if the symptoms seem to match. By the way, has your car had any other prior issues? Also, how many miles has it covered since your last check-up or service? This could help me to give you more precise advice. Hope this helps. Safe driving!

Hey, thanks for the response! I appreciate your input. Yes, my Volvo V60 diesel has already run 136673 KM since the last service. No other significant issues as such, but your experience with the defective electrical bypass valve has got me thinking. I'll definitely have my mechanic look into this matter. Wish me luck! Cheers.

Hey! No problem at all, glad I could help out. Given your car's condition and the distance covered since the last service, it seems possible that the electrical bypass valve, or even a stuck EGR valve, could be causing some of these symptoms you're experiencing. Both are common culprits in diesel engines. If it's the EGR valve, it could be causing the black smoke and power losses due to either being clogged, leaky, or failing to close. And if it's the bypass valve, it could be contributing to the whistling noises and stuttering engine. Regardless, make sure your mechanic tests these components if not already checked. I was able to resolve my issues post-repair, so fingers crossed it works the same for you! Ensure to update us on how it goes! Stay safe on the roads.

Hey, thanks a ton for the detailed feedback! You've made this whole understanding process a lot less daunting. The EGR valve issue completely skipped my mind, but looking at what you mentioned, it indeed makes sense. I'll ensure my mechanic checks these aspects you highlighted. Post resolving this problem, I'll surely update you guys about what was causing the trouble. Fingers crossed, and really appreciate your help. Drive safe! Cheers.
