Seeking Solutions for Black Smoke, Check Engine Light, and DPF Regeneration Issues in a 2003 Volvo V50 Diesel

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Strong exhaust smell

DPF regeneration failure

Hi everyone, I'm dealing with a bit of a puzzler on my 2003 Volvo V50 Diesel. Recently, I've noticed black smoke when I accelerate, and the check engine light has popped up. There's also a reduced engine power and the DPF won't regenerate properly. To top it all, there's also a fairly strong exhaust smell. I suspect that the diesel particulate filter might be overloaded, but I'm keen to hear if anyone has had similar experiences and how they fixed the problem. Can any of you shed some light on this or share what your workshop did to mend this? All suggestions are welcome!

Hey there! I think I can help you out with this. I had almost the exact same issue on my 2001 Volvo S40 Diesel, just a couple years older than yours. I'd say I have a fair share of car experience, but I'm by no means an expert mechanic. My guess could be that your DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) might indeed be at fault. This was exactly what happened to me - turned out the DPF was internally defective. Brought my car to my trusted workshop and they ran multiple tests to confirm the problem and in the end, I had to have it replaced. That cost me about 1550 Euro. A bit steep, but totally worth it because the problem was fixed once and for all. However, it would really help if you could share a bit more information about your car. Like, does the smoke specifically happen when the engine is cold or hot? Any issues with the car's performance? The more details, the better the advice I can give. Hope this helps and keep us posted!

Cheers for your response, really appreciate your help! The smoke does seem to happen more when the engine is hot and I've definitely noticed a bit of a dip in performance, especially when going uphill. In fact, I've felt a similar power loss while on the highway too. Just to note for you, the car's done 176,402 KM km since my last service. I guess I should probably take it into the garage to get it thoroughly checked out! Anything else they should look out for while they're at it?

Hey! No problem at all, happy to help a fellow Volvo owner. Based on what you've just described, it really does seem like a DPF issue to me. When the filter isn't working correctly, the engine has to work that much harder, hence the dip in performance and the oily black smoke you're seeing. When you take your car to the garage, I'd definitely suggest getting them to check your EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve and turbocharger as well. They're both related to the emissions system and if either of them are faulty it could potentially add to your problems. It's also worth asking them to look at the injectors. If they're not working properly or are clogged, they could be throwing more fuel into the engine than needed, and that excess can't be burnt off properly, which might be causing the strong exhaust smell you mentioned. Anyways, good luck with it and keep us updated, fingers crossed it’s a simple fix!

You're awesome! Thanks for the comprehensive advice. I'll make sure to get them to check the EGR valve, turbocharger and the injectors too. Funnily enough, I never thought to look into them. I'm a bit more aware now about what could have gone wrong with my car, and will hopefully be able to get this all sorted soon. It's a relief to have someone who's experienced the same issue. I'll let you know how it goes in the garage. Cheers again!
