Seeking Tips to Solve Volvo S40's Black Smoke Exhaust Problem and Regeneration Issues in DPF
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Volvo S40 Diesel is experiencing black smoke on acceleration, a check engine light, loss of engine power, and a strong exhaust smell, indicating potential Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) issues. The suspected cause is low particulate filter efficiency, possibly due to the DPF being clogged or defective, especially since it hasn't been cleaned or replaced despite the car's relatively low mileage. Suggested solutions include taking the car to a mechanic for a DPF check-up, cleaning, or replacement, and considering the use of a DPF cleaning additive for preventive maintenance.

Hey! Thanks for the reply. I'm definitely no expert in cars but now realising how crucial it is to know your motor, aren't I? So my S40 has approxily 57545 KM km on it. Quite a baby still, compared to your V50! But despite the relatively low mileage, I have never replaced or cleaned my DPF. Looks like I might have to take a similar approach as you did. Hopefully, it'll sort it out. Cheers for your help!

No worries, glad to help a fellow Volvo driver! And you're right, knowledge is power, especially when it comes to understanding these complex machines. With regards to your S40, it might be a bit surprising that the DPF needs attention at such a relatively low mileage. However, the usage pattern of the car can greatly influence this - mainly short trips without getting the engine up to temperature can lead to a sooty DPF. Having never replaced or cleaned the DPF should be the primary culprit here. So yes, I recommend taking it to your mechanic for a thorough check-up as soon as you can. The DPF may have simply become clogged and needs a good cleaning, or, worst-case scenario, it might need a replacement. Just remember to drive smoothly and avoid heavy acceleration until you can get that checked. A side note here is following my experience, I've started to use a DPF cleaning additive every couple of months as preventive maintenance. It's quite affordable and can extend the longevity of your DPF system, might be worth considering for you as well! Good luck with your motor issues. Hopefully, it'll sort out just fine and won't cost you an arm and a leg! Cheers!

You're a life saver! Appreciate all the advice, really do. I've booked an appointment with my local mechanic for a DPF check-up and possible cleaning or replacement. As for that DPF cleaning additive, it sounds like a great bit of preventative maintenance that I'll definitely look into. Nothing worse than driving around worried you're going to kill the car, eh? Cheers, and thanks again for all your help! I'll let you know how the mechanic visit goes!

Hey there! Sounds eerily similar to an issue I had with my 2009 Volvo V50 Diesel, basically a cousin of your S40. I'd put myself on the scale of having some car experience, a hobbyist of sorts, you know? Like you, my ride was spewing black smoke and had a pretty potent exhaust smell. Turned out, the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) was indeed defective due to high mileage on my baby. This actually makes the DPF system fail to regenerate, just like you suspected. To get it back on the road, I took her to my trusty local workshop. The mechanic there diagnosed it, and we ended up replacing the whole DPF. Not a cheap fix, though - it set me back by 1550 Euro. Ouch! But it may not be the exact same issue as yours, so could you provide a bit more info? Like how many miles do you have on your S40? When was the last time you got your DPF cleaned or replaced? More information would help in giving you a more accurate diagnosis. Cheers!
