Serena engine power loss

I'm having a serious issue with my 2018 Nissan Serena hybrid. The check engine light is constantly on, and the car feels like it's lost a lot of its power. It's really struggling to accelerate, and my fuel consumption has gone through the roof! I've done some basic checks, like looking for loose wires and checking the air filter, but nothing seems obviously wrong. My car has 185896 km on it. Could it be a timing belt issue, or maybe something with the camshaft? Any ideas what could be causing these symptoms?

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Nissan Serena hybrid is experiencing engine power loss, a persistent check engine light, and increased fuel consumption. Initial checks for loose wires and air filter issues revealed no obvious problems. A potential cause could be a failing crankshaft sensor, as similar symptoms were resolved by replacing it. It is advised to consult a mechanic for diagnosis and repair, particularly focusing on the crankshaft and camshaft areas, to avoid costly mistakes.

I had similar issues with my Serena. Have you checked the crankshaft sensor? Those symptoms sound a lot like what happened when mine started to fail. Definitely worth looking into before you start tearing into the engine.

Thanks for the quick reply! So, you think it could be the crankshaft sensor? Where exactly is that located, and is it something I could potentially replace myself, or would I need special tools? How difficult was the replacement?

I'm not 100% sure that's your issue, but what you described sounds like the cam sensor problem I had. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself unless you're pretty confident with car repairs. You'll need to access the timing belt area, and if you mess with the crankshaft position, things can get very expensive! My advice? Take it to a trusted mechanic and have them diagnose the crankshaft to camshaft reference value problem. It cost me around 340€, but saved me a lot of potential headaches.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I suspected it was something a bit beyond my capabilities. I'll take it to my local mechanic and mention the crankshaft sensor and the camshaft. Hopefully, that will give them a good starting point. I really appreciate the help!
