Silverado Preheating Lamp Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Chevrolet Silverado diesel exhibited issues with the preheating lamp not switching off, the check engine light being on, and smoke during acceleration. The suspected cause was a defective preheating control unit, possibly due to a bad cable or plug connection. After checking the voltage at the glow plugs and cleaning the contacts without success, a workshop visit confirmed a faulty connector on the preheating control unit, which was repaired to resolve the issue.

Voltage at the glow plugs seems fine. Engine starts okay. Could it still be the control unit itself, or something else?

Given the symptoms and the voltage being okay, a faulty control unit or its wiring is highly probable. You could try cleaning the contacts, but honestly, a workshop visit might be the best bet to diagnose it properly before replacing parts randomly.

Thanks. Cleaned the contacts, no change. Took it to the shop; faulty connector on the preheating control unit indeed. 95€ later, it's fixed.

Sounds like a preheating control unit issue for sure. Have you checked the voltage at the glow plugs? Also, is the engine hard to start, especially when it's cold?
