Silverado transmission grinding noise

Hey, I've got a 2000 Chevy Silverado, gas engine, and I'm having a heck of a time. The check engine light and transmission indicator light are both on. It feels like the gearbox is slipping, shifts aren't clean, and sometimes I hear grinding when it shifts. I even pulled the codes and there's an error in the memory. Mileage is only 67823 km. I'm thinking it might be torque converter failure since I feel some engine surge. Anyone seen this before?

Summary of the thread

A 2000 Chevy Silverado is experiencing transmission issues, including a check engine light, transmission indicator light, slipping gearbox, and grinding noises during shifts, particularly between 2nd and 3rd gear. The problem is suspected to be a torque converter failure, possibly due to engine surge and specific shifting issues. It is advised to have the vehicle diagnosed by a transmission shop to confirm the converter failure, as this can prevent further damage. A professional diagnosis confirmed the torque converter as the issue, leading to a replacement quote.

Grinding noises? Slipping is common, but grinding sounds more serious. Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition? Burnt fluid is a bad sign and low fluid could definitely cause those symptoms. Is the grinding constant or only during certain shifts? Converter failure is possible, but want to rule out other causes first.

Fluid level seems ok, not burnt as far as I can tell. The grinding is mostly when it shifts between 2nd and 3rd. I'm leaning towards this lock-up clutch thing. Any thoughts on how to verify the converter is bad before I commit to pulling the whole thing?

If the fluid's good and the grinding is specific to those shifts, a bad torque converter is probable. The grinding during shifts can indicate internal damage. Without specialized equipment, like a transmission dyno, it's tough to be 100% certain. I’d suggest taking it to a transmission shop for a proper diagnosis. They can run further tests to confirm the converter failure. A bad converter is going to cause additional damages. Get it properly diagnosed.

Okay, thanks for confirming my suspicions. Took it to a local shop and they ran some tests, and it's definitely the torque converter. They quoted me 2120€ to replace it. Ouch, but at least I know what the problem is. Thanks again for the help!
