Skoda Citigo Automatic Gearbox Problems

Alright, mechanics, I've got a head-scratcher. My 2015 Skoda Citigo with a gasoline engine is giving me grief. It's got 183326 km on the clock. The automatic gearbox is misbehaving – shifting isn't possible using the paddle shifters, and the shifts themselves are slipping or just plain unclean. Sometimes I even hear grinding noises. The paddle shifters are slow to respond, and occasionally the gearbox goes into emergency mode. My initial transmission diagnosis points towards a defective transmission control unit. Anyone experienced similar gearbox issues?

Summary of the thread

A 2015 Skoda Citigo with an automatic gearbox is experiencing issues such as unresponsive paddle shifters, slipping shifts, grinding noises, and occasional emergency mode activation. The initial diagnosis suggests a defective transmission control unit (TCU) as the cause. The recommended solution is to replace the faulty TCU, which involves programming a new unit to the car, and this successfully resolved the problem, restoring smooth shifting.

Sounds like a dodgy transmission control unit. I had similar gearbox issues with my old Volvo a few years back. Paddle shifters were unresponsive, and it felt like the gearbox was constantly searching for the right gear. Is the car computer throwing any error codes? When my automotive ECU failed, the whole system went haywire. Think of it like a conductor losing their baton – the whole orchestra falls apart. The grinding noises when shifting definitely point towards internal problems within the automatic gearbox itself. Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition?

Interesting analogy! Yes, there's an error stored in the error memory, which also points to the transmission control unit. Regarding the transmission fluid, I haven't checked it myself. Though, what was the repair like on your Volvo and what did it involve?

Ah, if the error memory is flagging the automotive ECU, that pretty much seals it. In my case, the Volvo needed a complete ECU replacement. It's not a simple swap – the new unit needs to be programmed to the car. Given all the symptoms, especially the grinding, I'd advise against driving it much further. You risk causing more damage to the automatic gearbox itself. Best bet is to get it to a workshop for a proper diagnostic check and replacement of the faulty car computer. I'm sure it is frustrating, but you will sleep better at night knowing you caught that in time.

Took it to a workshop following the advice. The transmission diagnosis confirmed the automotive ECU in the automatic gearbox was faulty. A new control unit plus labor came to around 1000€. It's shifting smoothly again. Thanks for the help!
