Thanks for the quick reply. What exactly do you mean by 'after the throttle body'? And how can I perform leak detection on the vacuum hoses myself?

Throttle body is basically a valve that controls how much air goes into the engine. 'After' means any leak between it and the engine itself. As for finding it, listen carefully! Sometimes you can hear it. Or, carefully spray some carb cleaner around the hoses while the engine is running – if the idle changes, you've found your leak! But honestly, with that mileage, those hoses are probably brittle. If you're not comfortable poking around, a garage will find it in minutes. Could even be a cracked intake manifold, but hoses are way more common.

Thank you for the insight. It turned out to be a split in the intake hose, just as you suspected. The repair cost around 100€, parts and labor included. The car runs much better now, and the check engine light is off.

Hissing and higher fuel consumption, plus the check engine light? Sounds like a vacuum leak alright. Check those hoses! A leak after the throttle body would definitely cause those symptoms. Is it throwing any specific error codes?
