Skoda Fabia AC and Speedometer Issues

I'm experiencing some trouble with my 2005 Skoda Fabia, gasoline engine, with 111758 km on the clock. I'm getting an error message on the speedometer, and the air conditioning system refuses to turn on. The error memory points to a defective temperature sensor on the heat exchanger. Could a faulty temperature sensor really cause all these problems?

Summary of the thread

A 2005 Skoda Fabia is experiencing issues with the speedometer displaying an error message and the air conditioning system not functioning. The error memory indicates a defective temperature sensor on the heat exchanger, which can cause the AC system to shut down as a precaution against potential engine overheating. The recommended solution is to replace the faulty temperature sensor, preferably at a workshop, to avoid further damage to the air conditioning control unit.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my Fabia a while back. The temperature gauge was acting crazy, and the AC wouldn't kick on. First thing to check is the temperature sensor on the heat exchanger for the engine cooling system. They're known to fail. Have you had the error memory read?

Yes, the error memory has been read, and it indicates a defective temperature sensor on the heat exchanger. But could that really stop the whole AC system from working? And is it a big job to replace the sensor?

Yep, a faulty temp sensor can definitely mess with the AC. The system probably thinks the engine is overheating and shuts down the AC to prevent further damage. Regarding the replacement, it's not the easiest job, especially if you're not familiar with the cooling system. You might be able to do it yourself, but honestly, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. I ended up damaging the air conditioning control unit in the process. Could be the reason why yours is also faulty.

Thanks for your help! I took it to the workshop, and you were right – the temperature sensor on the heat exchanger was the culprit. The air conditioning control unit was also damaged and needed replacing. Cost me around 980€ in the end, but at least it's fixed now.
