Skoda Fabia diesel engine issue

Need some collective wisdom. My 2012 Skoda Fabia with a diesel engine is playing up. The preheating lamp refuses to switch off, and the check engine light is now illuminated. Getting some serious smoke when accelerating, especially from cold start. I'm suspecting a defective glow control unit, and from what I've read, the likely cause is a dodgy cable or plug connection. Anyone experienced this before?

Sounds very familiar. I had a similar issue with my Fabia's diesel engine a while back. Preheating lamp wouldn't go off, and the engine light was on. Have you checked the cable and plug connections to the glow control unit? That was the culprit in my case.

Interesting! Where exactly did you find the cable was defective? Was it visibly damaged, or did you need to test it with a multimeter?

It was the plug connection itself, exhibiting corrosion. Didn't need a multimeter to diagnose, the damage was visible once I located the unit and inspected it. Still, I would advise going to your mechanic as soon as possible.

Thanks for confirming. I took it to my local mechanic, and they ran a diagnostic test which confirmed the glow control unit was faulty. Turns out, it was a corroded connector as you suspected. They cleaned it up and replaced a small section of the cable. Total cost was 95€. Appreciate the advice!
