Skoda Fabia Diesel Engine Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Skoda Fabia with a diesel engine is experiencing higher fuel consumption, engine stalling when idling, a check engine light, and smoke during acceleration. These issues may be caused by a defective mass air flow (MAF) sensor, as suggested by a friend. A diagnostic examination confirmed the MAF sensor was faulty, and replacing it, along with the air filter, resolved the problems.

I haven't checked the air filter specifically, but it was replaced during the last service. Could it really affect the MAF sensor that quickly?

It's plausible that a recently replaced air filter may still influence the MAF sensor. The quality of the filter, environmental factors, or even improper installation could contribute. If the symptoms persist, I recommend a diagnostic examination at a reputable workshop to accurately assess the MAF sensor. I suspect that MAF sensor is the cause.

I'm grateful for the advice. I took the Fabia to the shop and you were right, the MAF sensor was defective. They replaced it, and the air filter too since it was accessible. It cost me 365€, but the car runs like new again.

I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you're experiencing with your Skoda Fabia. I encountered similar symptoms with my Peugeot some time ago. Have you inspected the air filter? A clogged filter can disrupt the air-fuel ratio and degrade sensor performance. It could contribute to sensor failure.
