Smoke or smells, you say? Now that you mention it, I did get a faint whiff of something a bit acrid recently, but it was so brief I thought I was imagining it. Could a small exhaust leak really mess with the engine management system that much?

That faint whiff could be the telltale sign of a leak in the exhaust system. Even a small one can disrupt the sensor readings. It's best to get it checked properly, the diagnostic should be pretty quick. A faulty reading can definitely mess with the engine management, leading to the problems you're seeing. Sensor replacement might fix it, but the root cause may be the leak. Better get it smoke tested at a workshop.

Turns out you were spot on. Took it to a workshop, they smoke tested the exhaust system and found a tiny leak which, they reckon, caused the exhaust temperature sensor to go bonkers. Sensor replacement, leak fixed, and the engine management light is finally gone. Cost me about 265€. Massive thanks for your help, I was getting seriously stressed.

A faulty exhaust temperature sensor can indeed cause those symptoms. Higher fuel consumption, reduced power... sounds unpleasant. I had a similar issue on my Karoq, what a nightmare. Was there any smoke or unusual smells coming from the exhaust?
