Skoda Kodiaq 2018 problems with the engine, engine indicator light keeps coming on

Hello everyone, I have a 2018 Skoda Kodiaq with a diesel engine and 105432 km on the clock. Currently I have the following problems: black smoke when accelerating, check engine light on, loss of power, exhaust leak and strong exhaust smell. I suspect that it may be due to the exhaust aftertreatment. Have any of you had similar experiences and can tell me how you solved it? Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Skoda Kodiaq owner is experiencing engine issues, including black smoke during acceleration, a persistent check engine light, power loss, an exhaust leak, and a strong exhaust smell. These symptoms suggest potential problems with the exhaust aftertreatment system. A similar case involved a defective lambda sensor, which, when replaced, resolved the issues. It is advised to have the vehicle checked promptly to prevent further damage, such as to the catalytic converter.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I drive a 2016 Skoda Octavia, also with a diesel engine. I had similar symptoms to yours: black smoke, check engine light and loss of power. In my case, the defect in one of the lambda sensors was the culprit. Exhaust leaks and a strong exhaust odor could also indicate this. The defective lambda sensor was replaced in the workshop and then everything ran smoothly again. This fault was serious, because a defective lambda sensor can damage the catalytic converter in the long term. I would recommend that you have it checked quickly. It's better not to wait too long, otherwise it will only get worse. Good luck!

Thanks for the info! Do you remember how much you paid for the repair? Did you have to have other things repaired afterwards?

Hey, yes, I can tell you how much it cost. The repair cost me €375 to replace the defective lambda sensor. Since I've been to the mechanic, the "exhaust aftertreatment malfunction" has been fixed and my car is running perfectly again. Fortunately, that was the only repair that was necessary. No more problems since then. It's best to get it checked quickly before it gets even more expensive! Good luck!

Thanks for the info! That sounds pretty sensible, especially as I don't want to wait too long anyway. I made an appointment with my garage yesterday. They said on the phone that it could probably be the lambda sensor or the diesel particulate filter. I'm hoping that a replacement will do the trick for me too and that there's nothing major wrong. I will definitely report how it turns out. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Thanks again and best wishes!
