Skoda Kodiaq Diesel Engine Power Loss

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I've got a 2017 Skoda Kodiaq with a diesel engine, about 246592 km on the clock. Lately, the check engine light keeps popping up, and the engine feels like it's lost a ton of power. It's super sluggish, and sometimes it even stalls when I'm idling. Fuel consumption has gone up too. I also hear a whistling noise, like a loud hissing, when I accelerate. My mechanic thinks it might be a problem with the boost pressure system, maybe the wastegate is faulty? Does that sound right? Any ideas where to start troubleshooting? I have almost no idea about cars, especially about boost control.

Sounds like you're having boost issues, which can be a real pain. I had a similar thing happen with my Kodiaq. Check engine light, sluggish acceleration, the whole shebang. It might be worth checking the wastegate. If that's not it, look at the throttle body or even the intercooler. Sometimes a leak in the intercooler hoses can cause similar symptoms, like a whistling or hissing sound when accelerating.

Thanks for the advice! The wastegate sounds like a likely culprit. How can I check the wastegate myself? Is it something I can easily see, or do I need special tools? Also, what exactly does the wastegate do? I'm not super familiar with turbochargers.

Okay, so the wastegate is basically like a pressure relief valve for your turbo. If it's stuck open or not sealing properly, you'll lose boost pressure, like trying to fill a balloon with a hole in it. If you aren't experienced with cars I would highly recommend you take it to the shop. I had similar symptoms and a faulty wastegate was the culprit and I wouldn't want you to misdiagnose your issue.

Took my Kodiaq to the workshop, and you were spot on! It was indeed the wastegate valve. They replaced it, and the boost pressure is back to normal. The whole thing cost me about 860€. Thanks a lot for your help!
