So, you think it's most likely the thermostat? Did you have any coolant leak issues, or problems with the water pump or cooling fan?

Yep, same symptoms. No obvious coolant leak, the water pump seemed fine, and the cooling fan was doing its job. A faulty temperature sensor could also be to blame but in my case it was the thermostat housing which includes the thermostat. Get it checked out at a workshop!

Good to know I wasn't alone. Dropped it at the shop, and you were spot on. Defective map thermostat. Bill came to 350€. Thanks for the help!

Sounds like what happened to my Kodiaq! Was the engine taking ages to warm up too? I'd check the thermostat first. That's where I'd put my money. Could also be a coolant leak somewhere but thermostat is more likely. Think of it like the engine's personal climate control acting up!
