Skoda Octavia Diesel Refuses to Start Engine Control Malfunction Light On

My 2019 Skoda Octavia diesel, with 36754 km, is refusing to start. The engine control malfunction light is on. No start, nothing. I suspect it might be an ECU issue or even ECU failure, but I’m not sure how to proceed. I've checked the basics, like fuses, but I'm not very experienced with car electrics. Has anyone else encountered this? I also wonder if there are other things that can trigger similar behavior to an ECU failure. I have not experienced any other issues like engine stalling or engine surge before.

I had a similar problem with my Octavia. Check engine light came on and the car wouldn't start. Is the ECU issue still there? Have you checked the battery cable connections?

When you say 'similar problem', do you mean the engine wouldn't start at all? Was it also intermittent? And how did you identify the battery connections as the problem? Did you experience any engine stalling or engine surge before?

Yes, the engine wouldn't start at all. It happened suddenly one morning. In my case, the mechanic diagnosed it. I'd suggest getting it checked at a workshop. Could be simple as in my case, but it might also be something more serious than this ECU issue.

Took it to a local mechanic as advised. Turns out it was the battery cable connections, just like you thought. They weren't good. Repair cost was 155€. Thanks a lot for your help!
