Skoda Octavia start stop problem

Thanks for the quick reply! That analogy makes a lot of sense. I haven't checked the voltage myself, as I don't have a multimeter. But if the battery is the issue, why does the engine start without any problems? Shouldn't a weak battery also affect the engine start?

While the engine start requires a large burst of power, the start-stop system relies on the battery's overall health and ability to handle repeated charging and discharging cycles. A battery might have enough juice to start the engine, but not enough to consistently power the start-stop system. Given the symptoms and the error code, it's highly probable that the battery is the culprit. I suggest you visit a workshop to check the battery.

Took it to a trusted mechanic, and you were spot on. It was indeed the battery. A new battery and a diagnostic check later, and the start-stop system is working perfectly again. The bill came to 290€, which is what I expected. Thanks for your help!

The start-stop system on your Skoda Octavia is quite sensitive, especially with diesel engines. The fact that you're seeing a warning light and an error code strongly suggests a battery issue. Think of it like a marathon runner: if they're not properly hydrated (fully charged battery), they won't be able to perform at their best, and eventually, they'll have to stop. Have you checked the battery's voltage? A healthy battery should read around 12.6 volts when the engine is off. If it's significantly lower, that's a good indication that it's not holding a charge properly.
