Skoda Praktik Automatic Transmission Problem
Summary of the thread
The 2008 Skoda Praktik was experiencing automatic transmission problems, including slipping and being stuck in emergency mode, with the transmission indicator light on. The issue was suspected to be caused by worn-out transmission oil or something more serious. It was suggested that undervoltage might be affecting the transmission's electronic components, causing erratic behavior. The problem was confirmed to be due to undervoltage, and after addressing the electrical issue and replacing the gearbox oil, the transmission functioned smoothly again.

Thanks for the quick reply! How exactly would undervoltage affect the car transmission? And where would I even begin to check for that?

Essentially, the automatic gearbox relies on solenoids and sensors that need a stable voltage to operate correctly. A voltage drop can cause these components to malfunction, leading to erratic shifting or even the transmission going into emergency mode to protect itself. Checking the voltage requires a multimeter. You'd want to test the battery voltage both when the engine is off and when it's running. However, given the symptoms you're describing, it might be best to take it to a workshop with experience in car transmission problems. They can properly diagnose the electrical system and check the transmission's health.

Thanks for the input. It turned out you were spot on! The workshop confirmed undervoltage was causing the transmission issues. They sorted out the electrical problem and did an automatic gearbox oil replacement. Total cost was 240€. Shifts are smooth again now.

Interesting. Slipping transmission and the indicator light are definitely concerning. The 2008 Praktik's automatic gearbox isn't known for being bulletproof. Have you checked the vehicle's voltage recently? Undervoltage can cause all sorts of weird issues with the car's electronics, including the automatic transmission. If the voltage drops below a certain threshold, the transmission control unit might not function correctly, leading to implausible shifting behavior.
