Skoda Praktik Diesel Engine Power Loss
Summary of the thread
A Skoda Praktik with a diesel engine experienced significant power loss and excessive smoke during acceleration. The suspected cause was a defective diesel particulate filter, potentially due to frequent short trips preventing proper filter regeneration. It was advised to have the backpressure checked by a professional, which confirmed the filter issue. After replacing the filter, the car's performance improved significantly.

How did you check the backpressure? And yes, I mainly drive short distances. Could that really be the cause of the diesel filter problem?

I didn't check the backpressure myself; a garage did it using a vehicle inspection tool. And yes, short trips are notorious for causing diesel filter problems. The regeneration process needs longer journeys to burn off the soot. If it's constantly interrupted, the filter can get blocked. You're probably better off going to a reliable workshop and having them diagnose it properly. They can also check for any other underlying issues affecting fuel efficiency.

Big thanks! I took it to the workshop as you suggested. Turns out the diesel filter was indeed defective. Cost me around 1550€ to get it replaced. Now the car runs like new!

Sounds very similar to what happened with my Skoda Praktik. I also had reduced engine power and smoke. Have you checked the backpressure of the diesel filter? That could give you an initial indication. Also, do you do a lot of short trips? That can clog the filter.
