Skoda Praktik exhaust treatment malfunction

I am experiencing an exhaust treatment malfunction in my 2008 Skoda Praktik with a gasoline engine. The check engine light is illuminated, the engine runs roughly, there is an exhaust leak, and a strong exhaust smell is present. I suspect it might be a defective lambda sensor or NOx sensors. Any insights?

Hey, I drive a similar Skoda Praktik but I'm not sure about the year. I had a similar issue with the check engine light, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell, which turned out to be a faulty oxygen sensor. Have you checked the exhaust pipe for visible damage?

Thanks for the quick reply. When you say oxygen sensor, are you referring to the lambda sensor? I'm not very technical, but I read that a defective lambda sensor can cause an exhaust leak and trigger the check engine light. Did you notice any other symptoms, and did you measure the exhaust pipe?

Yes, lambda sensor, sorry! And I did not inspect the exhaust pipe too closely. Because of the exhaust leak and the NOx sensors involved, I would definitely recommend having a professional check it out. They can properly diagnose the issue and replace any faulty components. It could be a crack in the exhaust pipe itself.

Thank you for confirming the issue. I followed your advice and went to a trusted workshop. As suspected, it was indeed the lambda sensor that was defective, causing an exhaust leak. The repair cost came to 375€. Everything is now running smoothly.
