Skoda Praktik starting and stalling issues

Alright, need some help! My 2010 Skoda Praktik with a gasoline engine is giving me headaches. It's done 223999 km. Recently, it's been a nightmare to start, stalls at idle sometimes, and the check engine light is mocking me. I suspect it's the camshaft sensor, maybe the encoder wheel on the camshafts is defective, messing with the ignition timing and camshaft position. Anyone had similar issues?

Sounds like a camshaft position sensor issue. I had similar problems with my old Renault Megane. It would start rough, sometimes stall at lights, and the check engine light was always on. Have you checked the wiring to the sensor? Sometimes it's just a loose connection or corroded wire.

Cheers for the quick reply! Wiring seems okay on first inspection, but I'll double-check it more thoroughly. When you say 'similar problems,' do you mean the engine control was throwing the same error codes, and was the car stalling a lot?

Yeah, the engine control was throwing codes related to camshaft position. Car stalling was a constant issue, especially when the engine was cold. After checking everything, the mechanic found out that the encoder wheel was defective. Honestly, I would suggest taking it to a trusted workshop. They have the right tools to diagnose it properly.

Big thanks for the help! Took it to the workshop, and you were spot on. The encoder wheel on the camshaft was indeed the culprit. New camshaft sensor and encoder wheel later, and the car's running like new. Cost me 695€, but it's worth it to have it running right again.
