I appreciate the suggestion about checking the wiring harness. Where exactly should I be looking for these connections? And could a failing car computer cause these symptoms?

Given all the symptoms and the error code, I'm inclined to agree with your initial assessment: it's most likely the transmission control unit. While checking the wiring is a good idea, it sounds like the internal components of the control module itself have failed. A failing car computer or ECU can absolutely cause these symptoms; it's responsible for managing the transmission's functions. At this point, I would recommend getting a professional transmission repair diagnosis. Replacing and coding a new transmission control unit often requires specialized tools and knowledge.

Thanks for the insights. I took it to a trusted mechanic and, as you suspected, the transmission control unit was indeed faulty. New control unit, coding, and labor set me back around 1000€. Runs like new now.

Slipping gears and grinding noises definitely point towards a transmission issue. The fact that it's also throwing an error code and going into emergency mode strengthens the case for a faulty control module. Have you checked the wiring harness and connections to the transmission control unit? Sometimes corrosion or loose connections can cause similar symptoms. Also, what's the exact error code you're getting? That could provide more clues. I once saw a similar issue on an Audi A3, turned out to be a broken wire in the harness.
