Wiring harness under the seats? Is that something I can easily check myself, or do I need special tools? What am I looking for exactly?

Checking the harness is easy enough visually, but without a VCDS scan, you're guessing. Given it's the airbag, I'd advise against prodding too much. Could be a genuine fault, especially if it's related to a crash sensor. Probably best to get it to a workshop for proper airbag repair.

Thanks for the help. Turns out it was a defective plug connection, as suspected. Airbag repair set me back 95€, but at least the airbag warning lamp is gone and the vehicle safety is restored.

Airbag warning light is a pain. Could be a faulty crash sensor or a bad connection. Have you checked the wiring harness under the seats? Sometimes they get kicked and loosen.
