Skoda Rapid check engine light NOx catalyst aging

Alright, I'm chasing a persistent check engine light on my 2020 Skoda Rapid with a gasoline engine. It's got 239982 km on the clock. The error code points to the NOx storage catalyst aging. I'm also noticing a faint exhaust smell sometimes. I suspect it's an emissions system issue, possibly related to the catalytic converter. Could a leak in the exhaust system cause this?

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a persistent check engine light on a 2020 Skoda Rapid, with an error code indicating NOx storage catalyst aging. The issue is suspected to be related to the emissions system, possibly due to a catalytic converter problem. A suggested cause is a leak in the exhaust system, particularly before or around the catalytic converter, which can affect NOx emissions. The solution involved identifying and repairing a small crack in the exhaust manifold, which resolved the issue and turned off the check engine light.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds like a leak in the exhaust system somewhere before or around the catalytic converter. I had a similar issue on my Rapid. The engine management system detects the incorrect NOx emissions and throws a code. Have you checked for any hissing sounds when the engine is running?

Interesting. When you say "before or around the catalytic converter," could you be more specific? I'm not hearing any obvious hissing, but I'll check again. Where exactly should I be looking?

Yes, a small exhaust leak can definitely cause that. The sensors are very sensitive. If the leak is before the catalytic converter, it messes with the air/fuel mixture and affects the catalytic converter's efficiency, leading to higher NOx emissions. I would suggest getting the exhaust system checked for leaks by a professional.

Thanks for the insights. Took it to the workshop, and as you suspected, there was a small crack in the exhaust manifold. They welded it up, replaced a gasket, and reset the error codes. Cost me 265€, but at least the check engine light is off and I'm not polluting more than I should!
