Skoda Rapid Electric Steering Column Problem

I'm having a proper nightmare with my 2007 Skoda Rapid. It's the gasoline engine version, with about 178810 km on the clock. The electric steering column adjustment has gone completely kaput! There's an error stored in the memory, and the column simply refuses to adjust. From what I've read, the likely culprit is a defective cable or plug connection. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice before I reluctantly hand over my hard-earned cash to a garage? I'm trying to avoid a complete steering failure.

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Skoda Rapid owner experienced a malfunction with the electric steering column adjustment, which was not functioning and had an error stored in the memory. The likely cause was suspected to be a defective cable or plug connection. After checking the fuses and confirming they were fine, the issue was resolved by a workshop, where a faulty connector was cleaned and reconnected, restoring the adjustment function. The repair cost was 95€.

That sounds like a frustrating issue. Given the error and the symptoms, the cable or plug connection is a prime suspect, as you mentioned. Have you checked the fuses related to the electronic steering system? Sometimes a blown fuse can cause this kind of malfunction. Also, is the steering otherwise working normally? Any unusual noises?

Thanks for the quick reply! I did check the fuses, and they seem to be fine. The steering itself works perfectly; it's just the column adjustment that's dead. Is there any easy way to check the cable and plug connection myself, or is that something best left to a professional?

Okay, if the fuses are good and the steering itself is fine, then it does strongly point to a connection issue within the column adjustment mechanism itself. While you could try to visually inspect the connector, it's often difficult to properly diagnose without the right tools and experience. Given the potential complexity of the steering system, and the fact that you're already suspecting a connection issue, my suggestion would be to take it to a workshop. A quick diagnostic check should confirm the fault, and the repair cost should be around 95€ if it is just a loose cable.

Alright, just got back from the workshop. Turns out it was indeed a faulty connector, as you suspected. They cleaned it up, reconnected everything, and the adjustment is working again! Total cost was 95€, as predicted. Thanks a lot for your help!
