Wiring and connections? Where exactly should I be looking? Is there a particular spot that's prone to causing trouble?

That's exactly what it was for me. The warning light, the poor performance... everything points to it. I'd recommend having a workshop take a look. They can properly diagnose it and replace the faulty part if needed.

It was the knock sensor. The cable connection was defective, like you said. Cost me 95€ to get it fixed. Thanks for the help. Appreciate it.

I had a similar issue with my Skoda Rapid. The malfunction indicator lamp was on, and the fuel efficiency was terrible. Plus, the engine was idling rough sometimes. Could be the knock sensor? Have you checked the wiring and connections to the sensor itself?
