How do I check the wiring harness and plug connection? I'm not really familiar with car electrics and door electronics, but I'd like to take a look myself before taking it to a mechanic.

Yes, it's a common issue, and usually not the entire door handle itself but rather the cable or plug connection within the door mechanism. If you aren't comfortable with electrical work, I would recommend taking it to a workshop. They can properly diagnose the fault in the door actuator and repair the wiring or replace the connector.

Just got it back from the shop. They confirmed it was a defective cable/plug connection in the door mechanism, just like you thought. Cost me 95€ to get it sorted. Thanks a lot for your help!

Sounds like a faulty connection in your door electronics. The Skoda Rapid from that year is known to have issues with the door handle, door switch and the door actuator. Have you checked the wiring harness that goes into the door? Sometimes those wires can get brittle and break, or the plug connection might corrode.
