Thanks for the quick reply! I tried holding the button as you suggested, both up and down, several times, but nothing happens. The windows are still dead, and the error is still present. What do you mean by "window switch light"? I have no lights on any of the switches.

Okay, no lights on the switch suggests a deeper issue. If the basic reset didn't work and there are no lights on the switch, it's unlikely to be a simple fix. It really does sound like an issue with the car electronics. Could be a fuse, wiring, or the regulator itself. At this point, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop with experience in car electronics and window troubleshooting. They can properly diagnose the problem.

The garage confirmed it was the window regulator needing a reset after the battery change. They sorted it, costing 290€.

Sounds like a classic case of needing to re-initialize the window regulators after a battery replacement. The car's computer sometimes forgets the window positions. Have you tried the basic window reset procedure? Usually involves holding the window switch down until it stops, then holding it up until it stops, repeating a couple of times. Does the window switch light up at all?
