Skoda Roomster Diesel Engine Power Loss
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Skoda Roomster diesel with nearly 200,000 km is experiencing engine power loss, a constant battery warning light, difficult starting, and flickering lights. These issues are likely caused by a faulty generator, as indicated by error codes. The generator's failure can lead to a voltage drop, affecting the car's electronics and potentially damaging the battery. Immediate attention is recommended to avoid further damage or being stranded, and a workshop visit confirmed the generator issue, leading to a successful alternator replacement.

I haven't checked the voltage myself, I don't have the right tools for that. But if it is the generator, is it something that needs immediate attention? Or can I drive it for a little while longer? I'm just trying to figure out how urgent the repair is.

Okay, without measuring the voltage yourself, it's difficult to say definitively, but all the symptoms you described strongly suggest a faulty generator. Think of it like this: the battery is like a reservoir of energy, and the generator is like the pump that keeps it filled. If the pump fails, the reservoir will eventually run dry. While you might be able to drive it for a short distance, you're essentially running on battery power alone. This can damage the battery and potentially leave you stranded. Plus, if the voltage is fluctuating, it could damage other car electronics. Given the symptoms and the error code, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop as soon as possible to get it properly diagnosed and the alternator replacement done. Don't risk further damage or getting stuck somewhere. It's also worth checking the starter motor after the alternator replacement, as a weak battery from a faulty generator can put extra strain on it.

Just wanted to say you were right Took it to a workshop, and after diagnostics, they confirmed it was the generator. Cost me 960€ for an alternator replacement, but my Roomster is back on the road. Thanks for your help

Sounds like a classic case of alternator failure. Reduced power, warning lights, and starting problems all point in that direction, especially with that mileage. Have you checked the voltage across the battery terminals while the engine is running? It should be around 14V. If it's significantly lower, like below 13V, that's a pretty strong indicator. Also, a faulty generator can definitely cause a voltage drop, which could affect other car electronics. Have you noticed any issues with things like the radio or the car's computer?
