Skoda Roomster NOx Error and Exhaust Fumes

I have a 2014 Skoda Roomster with a gasoline engine and about 186347 km. The check engine light is on, and the error memory says 'NOx storage catalyst aging'. Also, I smell exhaust fumes more than usual. Could this be an exhaust system leak? I'm trying to avoid huge repair bills.

Sounds like a familiar problem! I had a similar issue with my old Renault Megane. Check engine light, error codes... turned out to be a small crack in the exhaust manifold. This can cause air quality problems, mess with the emissions system, and even affect fuel efficiency. Is your exhaust noticeably louder?

Louder exhaust I haven't really noticed, but it could be slowly worsening. Where was the crack on your Renault? Was it easy to spot?

On my Megane, the crack was on the exhaust manifold, near where it connects to the engine block. Not super easy to see without taking some heat shields off. A small leak can trigger NOx catalyst issues and throw those error codes because it messes with the air fuel mixture. The best bet is to take it to a shop and have them do a smoke test on the exhaust system. They can pinpoint any leaks quickly.

Thanks! The shop confirmed an exhaust leak. A new NOx catalyst and exhaust repair cost me 265€, but the light is off, and I expect my fuel efficiency to improve. I appreciate the help.
