Skoda Scala AdBlue Issue

I am experiencing an issue with my 2020 Skoda Scala diesel, with approximately 143398 km on the odometer. The speedometer displays an error message indicating that the AdBlue tank is empty. Consequently, the engine refuses to start. Error memory also confirms this. Based on preliminary research, I suspect a defective AdBlue output from the tank to the dosing unit. Could this be a likely cause? I am estimating a repair cost of around 250€.

Summary of the thread

A 2020 Skoda Scala diesel with approximately 143,398 km displayed an error message indicating an empty AdBlue tank, preventing the engine from starting. The issue was suspected to be a defective AdBlue output from the tank to the dosing unit. Inspection for leaks and fault codes was suggested, along with checking for crystallization or blockages in the dosing unit. Ultimately, the Skoda dealer confirmed the defective AdBlue output, and the repair cost was around 250€.

A completely empty AdBlue tank on a 2020 Scala with that mileage is unusual, but not unheard of. The dashboard alert and engine non-start strongly point towards a malfunctioning DEF injection system. Have you checked for any visible leaks around the AdBlue tank or the dosing unit? Also, can you read out the exact fault codes from the error memory? They can provide more specific insights than just 'AdBlue tank empty'. Make sure the tank capacity is enough for proper measurements.

Thank you for your reply. I haven't noticed any visible leaks, but I will inspect the area more thoroughly. Regarding the fault codes, I'll retrieve them and provide them to you as soon as possible with the next diagnostic run. Is there something specific I should pay attention to when inspecting the dosing unit?

Given the symptoms and your initial assessment, a defective AdBlue output is indeed a strong possibility. Carefully inspect the dosing unit for crystallization or blockages – this can happen with DEF fluid over time. However, given the age and mileage, internal failure of the pump within the AdBlue tank is also plausible, especially if you hear no pump activity during the start sequence. Ultimately, proper diagnosis requires checking the fault codes or having someone run guided function tests with diagnostics to check the complete injection system for proper function. Considering the symptoms, I would recommend taking it to a workshop.
