Skoda Scala Diesel Engine Light and Fuel Consumption Issues

My 2020 Skoda Scala diesel is throwing a check engine light and fuel consumption is way up. Mileage is around 158000 km. From what I've gathered, the inlet VANOS mechanics are faulty, probably a camshaft solenoid valve or some power issue. Anyone seen this before?

Summary of the thread

A 2020 Skoda Scala diesel is experiencing a check engine light and increased fuel consumption, with mileage around 158,000 km. The issue is suspected to be related to the inlet VANOS mechanics, possibly a faulty camshaft solenoid valve or a power issue. A similar problem in another vehicle was linked to the variable timing system and oil sludge. The solution involved replacing the camshaft solenoid valve, which resolved the issue.

That sounds similar to an issue I had with my Renault Megane a few years back. Check engine light was on, and the fuel consumption went up noticeably. Did you also experience any engine misfire or low power, especially at lower RPMs? In my case, it ended up being a problem with the variable timing system. I'm definitely no expert, but I'd check the oil for sludge. Maybe that's interfering with the VANOS system.

Engine misfire and low power especially at lower RPMs... spot on! I was thinking variable timing as well. When you mention oil sludge, where exactly did you find it? Was it visible on the dipstick, or did you have to look deeper?

Yeah, I could see the sludge on the dipstick, but it was also pretty obvious once the mechanic took the valve cover off. If you're seeing those symptoms, and you've already considered the solenoid valve, I'd say it's worth getting it checked by a professional. I ended up paying a good bit more than I expected initially because I delayed the repair. Good luck!

Thanks for the help. Took it to a shop, and it was indeed the camshaft solenoid valve. Replacement sorted it out. Total cost came to 250€, spot on with what I expected.
