Skoda Superb Brake Fluid Low Spongy Pedal
Summary of the thread
The issue with the 2023 Skoda Superb involved a low brake fluid level and a spongy brake pedal. Possible causes included worn brake pads, which can lead to increased fluid usage, or a potential leak in the brake system. The suggested solution was to inspect the brake system for worn components or leaks. Ultimately, the problem was resolved by replacing worn pads and discs, restoring the brake pedal's firmness.

Thanks for the detailed response! No visible leaks that I could find. As for noises, I do get some occasional squealing, especially when braking lightly at lower speeds. I'm suspecting worn pads, but could that really cause the brake fluid level to drop that much?

The squealing noise combined with low brake fluid strongly suggests worn brake pads. The drop in fluid level might be significant enough to cause the spongy feel you're experiencing. It's also worth considering that, while less likely, a small internal leak within the master cylinder could contribute to both the low fluid and the pedal feel. Given the mileage on your Superb, I'd recommend taking it to a qualified mechanic for a thorough inspection of the entire brake system. They can properly assess the condition of the pads, rotors, calipers, and master cylinder and identify any potential leaks or other issues. It is better to be safe than sorry with car brakes.

Got the Skoda back from the shop. It was worn pads and discs, as suspected. A new set was installed, and the brake fluid topped off. It cost 480€, but the pedal feel is back to normal. Thanks for the input!

Low brake fluid with strange pedal feedback is concerning. I had a similar issue with my older Volvo V70. The symptoms you describe could be related to several things within your hydraulic brakes system. First, it's vital to check for any visible leaks around the brake lines, calipers, and especially the master cylinder. The master cylinder is responsible for pressurizing the brake fluid when you depress the pedal. If the fluid level is indeed low, it suggests a leak somewhere in the system, or significantly worn brake pads. As the pads wear, the pistons in the calipers extend further to maintain contact with the rotors, which increases the volume of fluid required in the system, effectively lowering the level in the reservoir. Have you noticed any unusual noises when braking, like squealing or grinding?
