Skoda Yeti Transfer Case Limp Mode

I'm at my wit's end with my 2010 Skoda Yeti (gasoline engine) with nearly 200000 km on the clock. The transfer case seems to be stuck in some kind of limp mode. The gearbox feels like it's slipping, and the shifts are really unclean. I've read somewhere that faults in the ABS system can cause consequential issues, and I'm getting some weird ABS fault codes. Could this really cause the transfer case to go into limp mode?

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Skoda Yeti with nearly 200,000 km is experiencing issues with the transfer case being stuck in limp mode, causing the gearbox to slip and shifts to be unclean. The problem is suspected to be linked to ABS system faults, as weird ABS fault codes are present. It is suggested that the ABS faults could interfere with the traction control system, impacting the transfer case. After diagnosing and fixing the ABS faults, the limp mode issue was resolved, indicating the interconnected nature of these systems.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

That sounds frustrating. I had a similar issue with my old Volvo, though it was the Haldex system acting up instead of a transfer case. Slipping gears and limp mode are no fun. Have you checked the fault codes? That's usually the first step. Limp mode is basically the car's way of protecting itself from further damage. When the control module detects something is wrong, it restricts performance.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did check the fault codes. There are some ABS related codes, which is why I suspect that the transfer case issue might be a knock-on effect. You mentioned your Volvo – did the ABS affect your traction control as well? I'm seeing the traction control light on constantly, which makes me think it's all connected.

Yep, definitely sounds like a connected issue. If your ABS is throwing fault codes, it's highly likely to be interfering with the traction control system, and subsequently impacting the transfer case. The control module is probably getting conflicting data and freaking out. In my Volvo, a faulty ABS sensor was sending bad data, which messed with the Haldex control and put the car into a similar protected state. Best bet is to get those ABS faults diagnosed properly. Once that's sorted, the transfer case issue might just disappear. Otherwise, you may need to get the whole system scanned by a professional at a workshop.

Just letting you know, you were right. A mechanic checked the ABS fault codes, and after fixing that, the limp mode disappeared. Traction control is back too. It was a simple sensor replacement, so cost me 0€. Thanks again for your help!
