Cheers for the reply! Cylinder head, that sounds expensive! Where exactly should I be looking for the knock sensor and how can I check the ignition timing without specialist tools? Pre-ignition sounds scary, could that really be caused by something simple?

Yeah, cylinder heads can be a pain, but don't panic yet. With my Saab, it ended up being deposits in the combustion chamber causing the pre-ignition. Best bet is to get it checked out by a workshop, before you make it worse. Saved me a fortune in the long run. They'll be able to check the ignition timing and pinpoint the issue.

Okay, I took your advice and went to a workshop. Turns out you were right - it was deposits in the combustion chamber! They cleaned it all out, and the car's running great again. Cost me 425€, but worth every penny! Thanks for the help!

Sounds rough. I had a similar issue with my old Saab 9-3. Same symptoms – knocking, power loss. Did you check the knock sensor or the ignition timing? Could be pre-ignition causing the engine knock. Any idea if it might be cylinder head related?
